Nouns

A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. In Croatian there are 3 different genders of nouns: masculine, feminine and neuter.

How to Figure Out the Gender of a Noun

The simple answer is by looking at the letter the noun ends with; however, just like in English grammar, there are exceptions.

Masculine Nouns end in consonants.
Example: grad

Feminine Nouns end with the letter 'a', but can sometimes end in a consonant. These nouns you must memorize.
Example: škola

Neuter Nouns end with 'e' and 'o'.
Example: jutro

Plural Nouns

Masculine Plural Nouns end with 'i', unless the one word is only one syllable.
Example of multiple syllable noun: programi
Example of one syllable noun: gradovi

Feminine Plural Nouns end with 'e'.
Example: krave

Neuter Plural Nouns end with 'a'.
Example: ljeta
